This PhD thesis examines the complex relationship between Hermann Hesse’s conceptions of biography, historiography, and the philosophy of history in his last two novels, 'Die Morgenlandfahrt' and 'Das Glasperlenspiel'. A parallel is drawn between Hesse’s conception of individual life and his depiction of general history as both revolve around the idea of meaning. Second, modes of emplotment and formal argument are considered in conjunction in order to demonstrate Hesse’s linking of history and narrative, and the increasing intellectual sophistication of his thinking about history, the possibility of its narrative rendition, and the philosophy of history.
