In terms of attention, it’s not just quantity that counts but quality. It’s a great boon to be able to sustain one’s attention for a prolonged period of time but not if the quality of attention is impaired as a result.
For the term “attention span” to be meaningful, attention needs to be both stable and sharp at the same time. It makes no sense to talk about remaining focused when the object of our attention has become fuzzy.
Whatever your work I am confident that you will need to have razor-sharp attention skills, as anything less will result in less than optimal results in the best-case scenario but could be dangerous or even disastrous in the worst case (any scientists, surgeons, doctors, dentists, nurses, drivers, pilots, musicians, educators, accountants, bankers, lawyers out there?). In fact, I can’t think of many jobs where the quality of our attention and attention to detail do not matter.
Do you know that such attention skills are not fixed but can be cultivated through training our minds, using two important mental faculties?
